The Prayer Garden

A little Eden of prayer and reflection. Step aside from the day for a moment, turned, as the Order always is, toward Jerusalem.

A sacred tradition

Light a candle

For centuries the lighting of candles has carried our prayers upward, from the Tabernacle of Moses to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, where pilgrims still gather at the tomb of Christ to light a flame of hope.

Light a candle as a symbol of your prayer, your gratitude or your intention for someone you love. Your candle joins others lit by members and friends of the Order around the world, and your intention is carried to the Lieutenancy’s chaplains.

The Chaplet of Divine Mercy

Prayed on ordinary rosary beads, and traditionally at the hour of the Lord’s death.

  1. Begin with the Sign of the Cross, one Our Father, one Hail Mary and the Apostles’ Creed.
  2. On each large bead: Eternal Father, I offer thee the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of thy dearly beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world.
  3. On each of the ten small beads: For the sake of his sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world.
  4. Repeat through all five decades.
  5. Conclude, three times: Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

The Our Father

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. Amen.

The Hail Mary

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

The Apostles’ Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord; who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; on the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

The Angelus Kept at morning, at noon and at evening Pray the Angelus

At six, at noon, and at six

The Angelus

The bell that calls the Church to remember the Incarnation three times each day.

V. The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary.

R. And she conceived of the Holy Spirit. Hail Mary…

V. Behold the handmaid of the Lord.

R. Be it done unto me according to thy word. Hail Mary…

V. And the Word was made flesh.

R. And dwelt among us. Hail Mary…

V. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God.

R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

Let us pray. Pour forth, we beseech thee, O Lord, thy grace into our hearts; that we, to whom the Incarnation of Christ thy Son was made known by the message of an angel, may by his Passion and Cross be brought to the glory of his Resurrection. Through the same Christ our Lord. Amen.
